FAQs on Physical Exams and Screenings for Weight Loss

What Should I Expect During A Physical Exam/Screening?

A physical exam gives our staff a chance to learn about you as an individual. Because of this, we will want to use our time with you to gather important information. We do this by:

  • Conducting a physical exam. During a physical, we will measure your height; check your vital signs (such as heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature); listen to your heart and lungs; and examine your abdomen. Each of these steps will help us find or rule out any problem areas health-wise, allowing us to provide a more comprehensive and personalized care plan.
  • Taking your medical history. A medical history will allow us to consider a number of things that may influence your health, including your previous weights, prior or current ailments, stress levels, exercise and eating habits, medications, and more. We will also want to hear about your family's medical history to see if you may be predisposed to certain conditions.
  • Gather weight-related data. When we first meet with you, we will want to measure where you're starting in your weight loss levels. We do this by calculating your BMI (body mass index) to determine your overall risk of developing weight-related health problems. We also measure your waist circumference to determine if excess fat is being stored around your waist (where it increases the risk of diabetes and heart diseases)

Are These Initial Tests Necessary?

Very much so. These initial exams and tests will serve as baseline measures in tracking your progress at each step of your weight loss plan. And in addition to helping us track changes and progress in your weight loss journey over time, your physical exam and initial screenings can help us measure your arrival day vital signs. These are measurements of the body's most basic functions, such as blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature. Abnormal vital signs can indicate a serious health problem that needs to be addressed a certain way - perhaps with a specific diet, a prescribed medication, or a particular exercise. Elevated vital signs may also sometimes indicate a need to avoid certain things, either temporarily or permanently, in the interest of your health and safety. Ultimately, knowing your health numbers will allow us to better address and treat your wellness needs - making these initial tests a helpful step in your care journey.
